SAINT PETER, Minn. – It's safe to say day two of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships was for the Gusties.
Of the eight possible spots in the singles quarterfinals, seven will be Gusties. Three of the four doubles teams in the semifinals will also be Gustie teams, as Gustavus emerged victorious in the fall tournaments once again on Saturday.
ITA Midwest Regional Championships
Sunday's singles quarterfinals will feature No. 1 and No. 2 seeded
Marco Siviero (Sr., Sao Miguel de Oeste, Brazil) and
Josh Christensen (Sr., Rochester), as well as
Taona Mhwandagara (Sr., Harare, Zimbabwe),
Tyler Haddorff (Jr., Burnsville),
Rafael de Camargo Costa (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil), and
Dominik Knutson (So., Dvur Kralove nad Labem, Czech Republic).
Gage Gohl (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), seeded fourth in the tournament, will be the only Gustie not to face one of his teammates, taking on UW-Whitewater's Tyler Nelson, who is seeded ninth.
Each Gustie earned a spot in the quarterfinal via two victories on Saturday. The round of 32 was highlighted by some impressive Gustie matches, including that of Haddorff, who battled Whitewater's Giorgio to a three-set thriller, ultimately winning 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 over the No. 3 player in the tournament.
Costa claimed the first of what will now be many Gustie vs. Gustie matches of the weekend, defeating teammate
Takura Mhwandagara (Fy., Harare, Zimbabwe) 7-5, 6-1 to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals. Knutson added one of five victories over UW-Whitewater on Saturday, defeating fifth-ranked Billson, 7-6, 7-5, to advance in the tournament.
Sunday will feature Siviero vs.
Taona Mhwandagara, Haddorff vs. Costa, Knutson vs. Christensen, and Gohl vs. UWW's Nelson.
The Gusties were busy in doubles play Saturday, with three matches for each team to decide the four teams advancing to semifinals. Gohl and Haddorff, the reigning NCAA Division III doubles national champions, will be joined by the Gustie teams of Christensen/Siviero and
Taona Mhwandagara/Knutson. The only non-Gustie team belongs to UW-Whitewater, as Giorgio/Billson will face Gohl and Haddorff Sunday afternoon for a spot in the championship match.
Midwest Open
The Gusties' run in the Midwest Open singles "B" and "C" draw came to an end Saturday, with athletes ending competition in the rounds of 16 and quarterfinals on Saturday.
After going undefeated the day before,
Jacob Lucas (Sr., Lindsborg, Kansas),
Aadityaa Juniwal (Jr., Kolkata, India), and
Marty Anderson (So., Saint Peter) dropped their quarterfinal decisions in the "C" draw. In the "B" draw,
Odin Fouchier (Sr., Nootdorp, Netherlands) won his first match of the day, 6-7, 6-3, 11-9, but also fell in the quarterfinals.
Owen Skanse's (Fy., Edina) first weekend in Saint Peter ended with a 2-6, 2-6 loss in the quarterfinals to Coe's Daniel Rothman.
In the doubles bracket, Fouchier and
