No. 23 Men’s Tennis’ Knutson, Mhwandagara Advance to ITA Regional Championship Title Matches

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 23 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team is hosting and competing in the 2026 ITA DIII Men's Midwest Regional Championships this weekend. In the third day of competition on Sunday, Dominik Knutson won his quarter and semifinal matches to advance to the singles championship match. In doubles, the Gustie team of Knutson and Takura Mhwandagara won both of their matches to punch their ticket to the doubles title match.
 
Singles Draw
 
Knutson, who was the regional singles runner-up last year, opened his day in the quarterfinals against Joao Benvenutti of Luther. The Gustavus senior took the opening set 6-3 but fell 3-6 in set two. Knutson prevailed 10-3 in the super breaker.
 
In the semifinals, Knutson dominated the match to cruise to a 6-0, 6-1 near-sweep of Devansh Punjabi of Grinnell.
 
The Gustie senior is set to face Theo Billson of UW-Whitewater in the singles championship match.
 
Doubles Draw
 
Knutson and Mhwandagara battled Joao Benvenutti and Gustavo Pirri of Luther in the double quarterfinals, winning 8-6 to move on to the semifinal match.
 
The Gustie duo took on their fellow Gustavus teammates Yash Bahalkar and Christopher Dencker in their semifinal match. Knutson and Mhwandagara emerged victorious, taking the match 8-5 to clinch a berth to the doubles championship match where they will take on Billson and Luke Blumentritt of UW-Whitewater.

Both the singles and doubles championship matches of the ITA Midwest Regional will be played on Monday, October 5.

Knutson will battle Billson in the singles title match at 10:00 a.m.

Following that match, Knutson and Mhwandagara will take on Billson and Blumentritt for the doubles title at 2:30 p.m.
