BLAINE, Minn. - In a back-and-forth affair Saturday evening in Blaine, the Gustavus men's hockey team played Bethel to overtime for the second time in under 24 hours and suffered a 5-4 loss. The Gusties, now 12-7 overall, earn a point with the overtime loss, dropping to 8-2 in the MIAC.Â
The Gusties drew first blood 5:46 into the game as
Nate Stone scored his fourth goal of the season with the help of
Jac Triemert and
Jackson McCarthy. The lead stood until the 11:58 mark of the first as the Royals knotted the score at 1-1, which remained the score after the first period.Â
Gustavus regained the lead at the 14:08 mark of the second as
Kylar Fenton scored his second goal of the season, assisted by
Landon Johnson and
Luke Delzer, and the Gusties maintained the one-goal lead into the second intermission.Â
Bethel answered three minutes into the third period to tie the game 2-2, but once again, the Gusties punched back at the 8:42 mark as
Drew Holt tallied his fourth goal of the season for a 3-2 lead. But once again, the Royals answered and tied the game for third time at the 14:55 mark.Â
The home squad took advantage of a late penalty and scored the go-ahead power play goal with just 54 seconds left in regulation. Down but not out, the Gusties called a timeout with 48 seconds left and pulled goalie
Colin Androlewicz. The extra attacker paid off with just 17 seconds left as Holt netted the equalizer to send the game to overtime.Â
Bethel was able to flip the script from Friday night's Gustie overtime victory, scoring the game-winning goal with 1:10 left in the extra frame.Â
The Royals outshot the Gusties 35-27 as Androlewicz made 30 saves. The Gusties did not have a single power play opportunity, while the Royals went 1-for-4 on the man advantage.Â
Gustavus takes on Saint John's next weekend, starting with a game Friday night in St. Cloud.Â
