SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus men's basketball team struggled to find a rhythm in the second half Thursday, suffering a 75-64 loss to Carleton in the MIAC semifinals. The Gusties shot just 30.3 percent from the field and made 4-of-14 free throws in the final 20 minutes, dropping to 21-5 overall.Â
Carleton led for a majority of the first half, jumping out to a 16-8 lead in the first eight minutes. A couple layups by
Myles Barnette and a pair of threes by
Jake Schmitt and
Adam Biewen resulted in a 10-0 run for the Gusties and their first lead of the game at 18-16. The home squad continued to add to its lead over the next four minutes, as Schmitt hit another three, followed by an and-one by
Carson Koch, giving the Gusties a 29-23 advantage with 6:15 remaining in the half.Â
The Knights swung the momentum in the final four minutes of the half, regaining the lead at 37-35 and finishing the half with a 7-3 run for a 41-38 advantage at the break.Â
Carleton extended its lead to five in the first three minutes of the second, but a Barnette layup followed by a Biewen three tied the game 48-48 with 16:44 on the clock. The Gusties went on a 12-0 run over a three-minute span, led by eight points from Biewen to gain a 55-48 advantage with 14:10 remaining, but the Knights responded with a 16-2 run and never looked back.Â
The Gusties finished the game shooting a pedestrian 37.9 percent from the field, including 7-of-28 from three-point range, while making just 7-of-18 free throws. Biewen led the team with 18 points. Swanson added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.Â
Gustavus is on the outside looking in for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The selection show airs on NCAA.com at 11 a.m. Monday.Â
