SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus men's hockey team advanced to the MIAC playoff championship game with a decisive 6-2 win over Concordia on Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties (15-9-2) will host St. Olaf (14-9-3) next Saturday with a trip to the national tournament on the line.Â
The Gusties wasted little time to gain the advantage. A
Jackson McCarthy shot from the blue line rebounded to
Jack Anderson, who put home his fourth goal of the season just 3:37 into the game. Forty-four seconds later,
Wilmer Svensson played the puck from the behind the Cobber net and connected with
Joey Gimberlin for his sixth goal of the season. The Cobbers found the back of the net after a scrap in front of a sprawled out
Colin Androlewicz with 7:44 left and the score remained 2-1 after 20 minutes.Â
Gustavus was even quicker to score to start the second frame as
Jack Kubitz fired a shot from the left point, which was redirected in by Gimberlin for his second goal of the game just 41 seconds into the second. Three minutes later, the Gusties took advantage of their first power play opportunity of the game as
Jack Wineman won a faceoff, played it back to Anderson, who cycled the puck over to
Jack Suchy on the left point who took the pass off the boards and sniped it in the top right corner of the net for his team-leading 14th goal of the season and third on the man advantage. Concordia responded with a power play goal of its own at the 4:55 mark and the score read 4-2 Gustavus after 40 minutes.Â
The third period showcased a lot of back and forth but neither team scored in over 18 minutes of action. With time winding down, the Cobbers were forced to pull their goalie in the final two minutes. Suchy collected a loose puck in the Gustie defensive zone and sent it into the net to seal the victory with 1:32 left.
Jac Triemert added another empty-netter with 40 seconds left.Â
The Cobbers edged the Gusties 34-30 in shots on goal. Gustavus went 1-for-2 on the power play and killed off 3-of-4 Cobber advantages. Androlewicz earned the win in the crease after making 32 saves.Â
