ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Gustavus baseball team Sunday earned another doubleheader split at Washington University, finishing the four-game series 2-2. The Gusties are now 12-2 overall, while the Bears move to 11-4. Both teams received votes in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll.

WashU gained the early lead with solo runs in the second and third innings before the Gusties tied the game 2-2 in the fourth.
Danny Gavin led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice RBI by
Brady Schmitz.
Chris Knowles, who reached on a walk, scored on a single by
Luke Siegle.
Â
The Bears immediately regained the lead with three runs in the bottom half, ending starter
Adam Biewen's day on the mound. After a scoreless fifth, the Gusties tied the score 5-5 in the sixth after RBI hits from Siegle and
Joe Burns, including a run-scoring error. Once again, the Bears had a quick response, scoring a run in the bottom half to regain a one-run advantage.

Gustavus captured the momentum in the seventh with four runs on three hits to take a 9-6 lead. Siegle hit a two-run double, immediately followed by a two-run single by Burns.

WashU made it a one-run game in the eighth after scoring a pair on three hits and had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but
Sam Baker earned the two-inning save by coaxing a game-ending groundout.

Jackson Thielen improved to 3-0 after 3.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout. Four Gusties had two hits apiece, led by Siegle who drove in four runs and Burns who had three RBI.

The first two innings went without a run until the Gusties tacked one on in the third as
Tomas Nelson led off with a solo home run. The Bears put together a two-out rally in the bottom half, scoring five runs on four hits.
Logan Feeney entered in relief and limited the damage by stranding the bases full with a strikeout.

After a scoreless fourth, WashU put together another five-run inning in the fifth, going ahead 10-1 after five hits and an error in the frame. The Gusties added a run in the eighth after
Drake Siens reached on a walk, went to third on a double by
Brayden Kohls, and scored on a groundout by Schmitz.

The Gusties were limited to just five hits. Five different pitchers allowed 13 hits and six earned runs.

Gustavus now breaks until Monday, March 24 when it hosts Crown for a non-conference doubleheader.
