CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - No. 14 Gustavus men's tennis edged No. 25 Massachusetts Institute of Technology 4-3 on Friday, improving to 7-7 overall.
Gustavus opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
Josh Christensen and
Taona Mhwandagara won 6-3 at No. 3 followed by a 6-4 MIT win at No. 2.
Tyler Haddorff and
Gage Gohl then battled for a 7-5 win at No. 1, securing the doubles point.
Dominik Knutson rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 to open singles play. The Beavers then captured their first point with a win at No. 3 and then tied the match 2-2 with another win at No. 1. Haddorff regained a 3-2 lead for the Gusties with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5, but the Beavers once again tied the match with a three-set win at No. 2, setting the stage for match point at No. 6.
Luke Fridinger responded with a match-clinching 6-4, 6-2 win.
Gustavus continues play in Massachusetts tomorrow against No. 3 Tufts. The Gusties will play as a split squad as the second team hosts Nebraska Wesleyan (9 a.m.) and UW-Superior (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
