Trio of Gusties Earn MIAC Men's Hoops All-Conference, DeGrood Coach of the Year

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its 2024-25 men's basketball awards Tuesday and three Gustavus student-athletes received recognition as All-Conference, while Justin DeGrood was named MIAC Coach of the Year. 

Sophomore guard Myles Barnette, senior post Wyatt Olson, and senior forward Spencer Swanson were named All-Conference, while senior forward Evan Wieker is honorable mention. Senior forward Adam Biewen was selected to the All-Playoff Team. 

In his third season at the helm, DeGrood earns his first MIAC Coach of the Year honor after a season filled with "first time since." DeGrood and the Gusties posted the best regular season record of 21-4 since 2001-02, started the MIAC season 15-0 for the first time in program history (finished 15-1), won the MIAC regular season title for the first time since 2011-12, and went on a 12-game winning streak, which was the longest streak since 2004-05. DeGrood also coached the Gusties to some of the best statistical rankings in Division III late in the season, ranking sixth in field goal percentage, 16th in three-point percentage, 18th in rebound margin, and 21st in scoring margin. 

Barnette earns his first All-Conference nod after performing as one of the top bench players in the entire league. Barnette was third on the team with 10.5 points per game, shooting 60.2 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. Barnette averaged 18.8 minutes and played in all 26 games. He also averaged 3.5 rebounds to go along with 51 assists, 30 steals, and a team-high 14 blocks. 

Olson garners All-MIAC honors for the second straight season after ranking second on the team with 11.2 points per game and first with 6.8 rebounds per game. Olson started in all 26 games, averaging 25.0 minutes. He shot 55.1 percent from the floor and 67.5 percent from the charity stripe. Olson also dished out 67 assists, collected 24 steals, and posted 10 blocks. Olson finished his three-year career at Gustavus with 807 points and 467 rebounds. 

Swanson joins the All-MIAC ranks for the third consecutive season after leading the Gusties wth 11.5 points per game. Starting in all 26 games, Swanson shot 44.6 percent from the floor and averaged 6.6 rebounds. As he has done the past three season, Swanson led the team in playing time, averaging 33.0 minutes per game. He also distributed a team-high 70 assists, along with 22 steals, and 10 blocks. Swanson finished his decorated career ranking ninth in program history with 1,522 career points, fifth with 736 career rebounds, and eighth with 590 career made field goals. 

Wieker is honorable mention after averaging 9.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Wieker started in 24 games this season and played in 107 throughout his career. He became the 35th member of the Gustavus 1,000-point club and ranks 32nd in program history with 1,040 career points. Biewen was named to the All-Playoff Team for the second straight season after leading the Gusties with 18 points in the semifinal game against Carleton. He shot 7-for-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from long range.
