GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Gustavus women's tennis team, which dropped one spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings to No. 23 in the nation, improved to 9-3 overall with a 5-2 win over Southwestern (Texas) on the second day of their Texas spring trip.
The Gusties claimed the first point of the match with a sweep in the doubles competition over the Pirates (4-3, 4-0 SCAC).
Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Kaya De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands) won 6-2 at No. 1, followed by another 6-2 win for the Gusties from
Molly Austin (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) and
Allison Szalay (Jr., ) at No. 2.
Pavla Yakimova (Jr., Glasgow, Scotland) and
Brooke Haddorff (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) won 6-1 at No. 3.
In singles play, all six matches were decided in two sets, led by Elvestrom's 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1. De Bruijn won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, while first-years
Noor Omar (Fridley, Minn.) and
Lanie Davis (St. Louis, Mo.) won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Omar claimed a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) victory, while Davis won 6-4, 6-0.
The Gusties face nationally-ranked No. 10 Trinity (Texas) tomorrow afternoon, March 6, in San Antonio.
