SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 23 Gustavus women's tennis dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 10 Trinity in its first of three consecutive nationally-ranked matches on Thursday, March 6.
Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Kaya De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands) claimed the only Gustie victory of the day in the No. 1 doubles, as the All-American duo defeated Trinity's Rosabella Andrade and Trinity Levy. Elvestrom and De Bruijn won 6-4 at No. 1.
Molly Austin (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) and
Allison Szalay (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) fell 6-1 at No. 2, while
Pavla Yakimova (Jr., Glasgow, Scotland) and
Brooke Haddorff (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 3.
In singles play, the Tigers (10-1 overall) claimed every match in two sets. De Bruijn played a heartbreaker at No. 2, dropping a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-8) decision to Olivia Kim, the 15th-ranked singles player in
Trinity's region. Austin gave Trinity's Ellie Hughes, ranked No. 48 in the nation and No. 12 in the region individually, a run at No. 3 singles, falling 7-6 (7-2) and 6-2. Elvestrom, who's ranked No. 14 in the nation individually, fell to the No. 13 ranked Ruth Hill at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1.
The Gusties (9-4, 2-0 MIAC) enjoy a day off in Texas before turning around for another nationally-ranked battle, facing No. 12 MIT (2-0 overall) at 12 p.m. in San Antonio on Saturday, March 8.
