No. 23 Women’s Tennis Drops 6-1 Decision to No. 12 MIT in Texas

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 23 Gustavus women's tennis team met No. 12 MIT in Texas as a part of its annual spring break trip, falling to the Beavers by a score of 6-1. The Gusties (9-5, 2-0 MIAC) won their only point at the No. 6 singles courtesy of Brooke Haddorff (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.).

MIT (3-1 overall) took the 1-0 lead after the doubles, defeating all three Gustie teams. Molly Austin (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) and Allison Szalay (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) dropped a 6-1 decision to the Beavers, followed by a 6-4 loss at No. 3 for Ella De Young (So., Iowa City, Iowa) and Lanie Davis (Fy., St. Louis, Mo.). Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Kaya De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands) gave the No. 1 Beavers team a run, ultimately falling 7-5 to Alaina Kolli and Artemis Pados.

In singles play, Haddorff claimed the only Gustie point of the day, defeating MIT's Alicen Liu at No. 6. Haddorff won set one 7-5 but dropped the second to Liu 2-6. She claimed the tiebreaker 11-9.

De Bruijn (No. 2), Noor Omar (Fy., Fridley, Minn.) (No. 4), and Pavla Yakimova (Jr., Glasgow, Scotland) (No. 5) each fell in straight sets to the Beavers. Both Elvestrom and Austin won their first sets at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, but struggled against the Beavers late in the match. Austin ultimately fell 6-2, 2-6, 0-6, while Elvestrom dropped a heartbreaker at No. 1, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7.

The Gusties conclude their spring trip in Texas with a 2 p.m. match against No. 9 Wash U (Mo.), their third nationally-ranked battle in a row and third top-15 match of the season.
