Men’s Golf Opens Cochran Collegiate With Two Rounds in Tennessee

4/14/2025 7:34:00 PM

CORDOVA, Tenn. – The Gustavus men's golf team is in seventh place out of 18 teams following the first 36 holes of the Cochran Collegiate held Monday, April 14, at Colonial Country Club (par 72), hosted by Rhodes College (Tenn.).

Babson (Mass.) leads the field with a two-round score of 599 (+23), two shots ahead of Lynchburg (Va.) in second (+25, 601).

Pelayo Perez Crespo (Jr., Sotogrande, Spain) is tied for 11th out of 90 golfers with a two-round total of 152 (+8) to lead the Gusties individually. Perez Crespo carded a five-over 77 in his second round to move up 11 spots. He's just one shot out of the top-10 heading into Tuesday's final round.

Jimmy Abdo (Fy., Edina, Minn.) and Chris Gutuza (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa) led the Gusties with five birdies over the two rounds and are tied for 24th at 154 (+10) each. Abdo had the best first round for the Gusties, sitting second after 18 with three birdies and 11 pars.

Wyatt Carlson (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.) carded a 78-80-158 for a tie of 53rd, while Teddy Kaste (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) shot an 82 in each round.

"Against a very strong field and a difficult golf course, we had a good first round ending up in fourth place. Our second round today was not quite as sharp and the field came back with some great play," said assistant coach Randall Stuckey '83. "Conditions were very windy today and Colonial tests your game and requires good shots off the tee, approach shots, and some difficult greens. There were no easy shots or holes on this golf course. I really liked how patient the guys were battling the difficult winds by floating the ball and allowing for some tricky roll-outs. Thirty-six holes is a long day so we look forward to finishing up with just 18 tomorrow."

Competition resumes tomorrow morning with the final round at 7:30 a.m. CST (8:30 a.m. local).
