Baseball Slams Past Cobbers in Another Sweep

MOORHEAD, Minn. - No. 19/22 Gustavus baseball earned its fifth MIAC sweep of the season Wednesday, handing Concordia losses of 12-2 and 13-4. The Gusties, who hit two grand slams during the doubleheader and have now won eight straight, improve to 27-6 overall and 11-2 in the MIAC.

Gustavus 12, Concordia 2

Reigning MIAC Pitcher of the Week Adam Biewen had another solid performance on the mound, tossing six scoreless innings to improve to 4-0. Facing 22 batters, Biewen allowed just five base runners on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

After two scoreless frames, the Gusties plated a couple runs in the third after a Brayden Kohls sacrifice fly and an RBI double by Luke Siegle. The double scored Chris Knowles, which marked his 136th career run, passing Gustavus Athletics Hall of Famers Tony Konicek '07 and Brad Mazer '02 for third place in program history.

The Gusties expanded their lead to seven in the fourth, highlighted by a solo homer by Joe Burns and a grand slam by Kohls - both registering their third home runs of the season. The visitors then put the game well out of reach in the seventh with five more runs for a 12-0 advantage. Drake Siens, Ross Hebel, Danny Gavin, and Knowles each had RBIs in the final frame.

Concordia scored its two runs in the seventh on three hits and a wild pitch, but Michael Prosch was able to close out the game on the mound.

Gavin (3-4, R, RBI, 2B, BB) and Siens (3-4, RBI, 2 2B) led at the plate with three hits apiece. With two doubles in the game, Siens tied Chris Swansson '99 for fourth place in program history with 43 career doubles.

The Cobbers gained their first lead of the day with solo runs in the second and third innings, but the Gusties stormed back in the fourth to take the lead for good. Burns drove in the first run with a sac fly and two batters later, Gavin hit the second Gustie grand slam of the day, marking his fifth homer of the season.

Concordia tacked on a run in the home half after three hits and the fifth inning went scoreless before the visitors added four runs on as many hits in the sixth. Hebel hit an RBI double, and Kohls drove in three runs with a double to right center.

The seventh and eighth innings went without a run and the Gusties once again put the game well out of reach late, scoring four more runs on four hits in the ninth. Burns hit a three-run double to right center and Dylan Kopesky drove in a run with a single down the right field line. The Cobbers scored their final run in the bottom half.

Benny Mcdonald improved to a team-best 6-0 after tossing eight innings. He allowed three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Jackson Thielen gave up one run on two hits in the ninth and struck out two batters.
