Baseball Sets Win Record in Sweep Over St. Olaf

SAINT PETER, Minn. - No. 18/21 Gustavus baseball punched its ticket to the MIAC playoffs with a doubleheader sweep over St. Olaf on Tuesday. The Gusties dominated in game one, winning 15-0, and secured the sweep with a 15-9 win in game two. Gustavus improves to 31-7 overall and 15-3 in the MIAC, which marks the most wins in a single season in program history. The Gusties now control their own destiny for the MIAC championship with the regular season finale Friday at Macalester.

Gustavus 15, St. Olaf 0

Adam Biewen once again continued his dominance on the mound, pitching six shutout innings while allowing just one hit. The Gustie bats took care of the rest, scoring 15 runs on 12 hits.

The home squad took control of the game right from the get-go, plating nine runs in the first inning. Luke Siegle drove in the first run, which proved to be the game-winner, on a single to left, scoring Danny Gavin. Drake Siens followed with an RBI single to center and two batters later, Joe Burns knocked in two runs with a single to left center. Batting ninth in the order, Sam Schneider plated a pair of runs with a double to right. Two more runs crossed home on a fielding error and the final run of the frame was scored on a double by Chris Knowles.

Schneider gave the Gusties a 10-0 advantage in the second with a double to left center and the lead grew to 11 in the third as Siegle hit an RBI single. Siens put an emphatic stamp on the victory in the fourth, hitting a grand slam for his fourth homer of the season.

Biewen improved to 6-0 on the season and didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. He struck out four batters. Tanner Hopkins pitched a no-hit seventh with two strikeouts.

Siens led at the dish, batting 4-for-4 with five RBI, a grand slam, and a stolen base.

The Gusties rolled their momentum into game two, taking a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Burns hit a three-run homer, followed by a two-run double by Brayden Kohls, and an RBI single by Siegle.

The home team then tacked on seven more runs in the fourth for a commanding 13-0 lead. Knowles and Siegle hit back-to-back homers, their ninth and third of the season, respectively. Gavin hit a two-run single, Schneider scored on a wild pitch, while Siegle and Siens both drew bases-loaded walks.

Benny Mcdonald was perfect through 3.2 innings before the Oles connected for their first hit with two outs in the fourth. The Oles then scored their first two runs in the fifth after two hits and two errors. McDonald went out for the sixth and tossed a three-up, three-down inning to end his day on the mound. He did not allow an earned run with three hits and five strikeouts, improving to a team-best 7-0 this season.

St. Olaf made a comeback bid in the seventh, scoring six runs on seven hits and one Gustie error, cutting the deficit to five.
