WHITEWATER, Wis. - No. 30 Gustavus men's tennis begins NCAA tournament play today in the second round of the regional against host No. 29 UW-Whitewater at 2 p.m. The Gusties received a first round bye and enter with a 19-11 overall record, while the Warhawks are 17-5 after defeating Luther 4-0 yesterday in the first round.
Gustavus is making its 37th NCAA tournament appearance, which marks the third most appearances in Division III men's tennis history. Today's match is a rematch of last year's NCAA second round face off between the Gusties and Warhawks where UWW captured a 5-4 win in Whitewater. This season, the two squads played on April 5 in Madison and the Gusties claimed a 6-1 victory.
Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff opened the match with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Marco Siviero and
Dominik Knutson secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 2. The Warhawks were able to pull of a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles, but that result did not count in the team score.
Gohl then gave the Gusties their first singles point with a swift 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1. Haddorff quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5, and
Luke Fridinger secured the team victory with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 6.
Siviero erased a 6-4 first set loss at No. 2, coming back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. UWW got its lone point with a three-set win at No. 3, while Knutson closed out the match at No. 4, battling for a 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 win.
The Gusties are looking to advance to the regional championship for the first time in two seasons. The Gusties defeated Chicago 5-4 in the 2023 regional title match in Saint Peter, advancing the to NCAA quarterfinals. If the Gusties win today, they will face the winner of Chicago and Grinnell at noon Sunday.
