MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team battled the No. 13/14 nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Stout Blue Devils on the road Friday night. The Gusties held the Blue Devils scoreless for over 58 minutes in a 4-1 upset victory to win their ninth game in a row and move to 11-5-1 on the season.
Following a scoreless opening period, Gustavus scored just 14 seconds into the second as
Ludvig Mellgren capitalized on a power-play opportunity to score his fifth goal of the season to put the Gusties up 1-0.
Emil Samuelsson assisted Ludvig with the goal.
Gustavus scored thrice more in the third period.
Jayar Luedke stole the puck from behind the Blue Devils net and snuck the puck in just 43 second into the final period, doubling the Gusties' lead with his second goal of the year. Just two minutes later,
Jack Wineman won a faceoff and sent the puck to
Charlie Sandven, who fired in his third goal of the season to put Gustavus up 3-0.
Grant Ellings added one more for the Gusties to put them up 4-0 with just over seven minutes remaining in the game, scoring his fifth of the season with
Nick Blood notching the assist.
UW-Stout avoided the shutout with a goal in the final two minutes, but the Gusties nonetheless secured the 4-1 victory.
Marko Belak earned the win in goal for Gustavus with 26 saves and a .963 save percentage.
Up next for the Gusties is a two-game MIAC series against the Bethel University Royals starting on the road next Friday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m. before returning home to St. Peter for game two the following evening.
