SAINT PETER, Minn. - Gustavus women's basketball never trailed in Saturday's game, overtaking the Macalester Scots, 63-48. The win Saturday extended the Gusties' win streak over the Scots to 20 games.
Junior
Ella Peters (River Falls, Wis.) got her third double-double of the season in the win, scoring 20 points and adding 12 rebounds.
The Gusties started the game red-hot with an 8-0 run, going three-for-three from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point land. Junior classmates
Whitley Ronn (Lakeville, Minn.) and
Kendyl Queensland (Grand Meadow, Minn.) made threes and sophomore
Anna Goodman (Lakeville, Minn.) added two more to force an early timeout for Macalester. Out of the timeout, the Scots returned the favor, going on a 7-0 run to climb back in the game and force the first Gustie timeout of the game. After both teams had settled in and used a timeout, junior
Ella Peters (River Falls, Wis.) got the scoring going again, hitting a three to extend the lead to four after a four-minute scoring drought for the home team. Peters would end the scoring in the quarter too, hitting a corner three with four seconds left that pushed the score to 16-11 after the first. Three-point land was sacred for the Gusties in the first, going 4-for-7, giving the home team 12 of their 16 points.
In the second, Gustavus extended their lead, using an early 9-2 run over the first five minutes of the quarter to extend their lead to 12. After a Macalester three to cut the run, the Gusties went on another 6-0 run, thanks to junior
Peyton Stevermer (Mankato, Minn.), sophomore
Bella Sutch (Blaine, Minn.), and Peters. With the score 31-16, the Scots would get one point back by the end of the quarter, sending both teams to the locker room with the score 35-21 in favor of the Gusties. While the three ball slowed for the Gusties, they shot 9-for-22 in the quarter, just eclipsing a 40 percent clip and led on the offensive glass, 5-1.
The Scots came out for the second half reenergized, starting on an 8-2 run to get the game back within eight. The Gusties did well to keep distance, sprinkling makes to slow down Macalester and keep themselves at an arm's distance. Goodman added two assists in the quarter and Peters made two baskets, but Macalester held the advantage in the quarter, 17-10. The Scots went 7-for-13 at the charity stripe compared to the Gusties 1-for-2 and Gustavus led the rebound game, 10-6 to set up the fourth quarter at 45-38.
Gustavus found themselves in the fourth quarter, going on a 13-3 run over the course of the first seven and a half minutes of the quarter to shut the door on the visitors. No Gustie scored more than two points on the run, with sophomore
Olivia Grothaus (Hudson, Wis.), Queensland, Ronn, Sutch, Peters, and Goodman all contributing in various fashion. Goodman also continued her hot streak dishing out the ball, adding a team-high seven assists across the night, the latest being to Peters who hit a late three to eclipse 20 points and seal the game for Gustavus.
In addition to 20 points, Peters added 12 rebounds for a double-double, her third of the season. Queensland had a near double-double with eight points and nine rebounds, followed by Goodman with eight points and seven assists. Ronn had a team-high five steals on the afternoon in addition to seven points to help push the Gusties to 15 points off turnovers.
The Gusties never trailed the Scots in the contest and led in almost every statistical category Saturday, including points in the paint (30), second chance points (21), and fast break points (12).
Gustavus women's basketball will stay on Gus Young Court, hosting St. Scholastica on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. to continue their MIAC campaign.
