SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team battled the University of Dubuque Spartans at home Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest. The Gusties took down the Spartans 6-1 to complete the weekend series sweep and improve to 8-5-1 this winter.
Sam Rice put the Gusties on the board with five and a half minutes remaining in the opening period, scoring with
John Johannson and
Charlie Sandven assisting.
Ludvig Mellgren doubled the lead for Gustavus three minutes later with a power-play goal, assisted by
Kyle Doll and Rice.
The Spartans scored four minutes into the second period to cut the Gusties' lead down to one, but Rice scored his second goal of the game on a power play three minutes later, assisted by Mellgren and
Jackson McCarthy, to retake the two-goal lead for Gustavus up 3-1.
Nate Stone added another power play goal, assisted by Sandven and
Drew Holt, with just over two minutes remaining in the second period to give the Gusties a 4-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
Gustavus scored twice more in the third period.
Kiki Brown found the back of the net eight and a half minutes in with a goal assisted by
Brendan Sloth and
Nick Blood.
Owen Hendrikson capped off the game with a breakaway goal, assisted by
Artem Korolev, in the final minutes.
Marko Belak earned the win in goal for the Gusties with 28 saves.
Up next for Gustavus is a two-game conference series against the Saint Mary's University Cardinals starting at home next Friday, January 9 at 7:00 p.m.
