SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 23 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team is hosting and competing in the 2026 ITA DIII Men's Midwest Regional Championships this weekend. In the second day of competition on Saturday, three Gusties in singles and two Gustavus doubles teams advanced to the main draw quarterfinals.
Singles Draw
Dominik Knutson, who was the regional singles runner-up last year, began the day by rallying to defeat Cyriac Cayuela of Carthage 4-6, 6-1, (10-5) in the Round of 32. The senior then went on to win his Sweet 16 match 6-4, 6-3 over Daniel Moeller of UW-Whitewater. Knutson will face Joao Benvenutti of Luther in the quarterfinals.
Christopher Dencker rallied to win his first match of the day, falling behind 4-6 but then taking the second set 6-3 and the tiebreaker 10-5 to defeat Charles Morgan of UW-Whitewater. The first-year earned a hard-fought victory in the next round, falling behind again 2-6 but rallying for a 6-3 second set win and then taking the breaker in 11-9 in extras. Dencker will face Mateo Torre of St. Scholastica in the quarterfinals.
Christian Wong took the opening set of his match against Josh Tiemann of Coe 6-1 but then fell 5-7 in the second before breaking through in the breaker for a 10-6 win. The first-year then took a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Henry Park of Grinnell to advance further in the tournament. Wong will face Theo Billson of UW-Whitewater in the quarterfinals.
Doubles Draw
Knutson and
Takura Mhwandagara took down Hayden Martin and Abhi Nagar of Loras 8-1 to begin their day of doubles play. The No. 1 doubles seed in the regional went on to win 8-3 over Wyatt Crowell and Brendon Sebring of Hamline to advance to the Elite Eight. Knutson and Mhwandagara will face Joao Benvenutti and Gustavo Pirri of Luther in the quarterfinals.
Yash Bahalkar and Dencker defeated Gerardo Ramirez Mainou and Pedro Vardanega Landmeier of Luther in an 8-4 final to open the day. The Gustie duo then earned an 8-6 victory over Andres Saavedra and Augusto Yamazaki of MSOE. Bahalkar and Dencker will face Maxi Gutbezahl and Alexander Doane of Grinnell in the quarterfinals.

The Gusties will compete in the quarterfinal matches of singles and doubles on Sunday, October 4.
Singles quarterfinals are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. with the semifinals to follow at 12:00 p.m.
After the conclusion of singles play, the doubles quarterfinals will then take place around 2:30 p.m. with the semifinals tentatively scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
The championship matches will take place on Monday, October 5.
