SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team battled the Bethel University Royals at home Saturday night in a conference contest between the two teams tied for first place in the MIAC standings. The Gusties earned a 2-1 overtime victory to overtake the Royals in the conference standings, taking sole possession of first place by one point with just six games remaining in the regular season. The win was the 11
th in a row for Gustavus as they moved to 13-5-1 overall this season and 8-2 in the MIAC.
The Royals took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game, but
Nate Stone tied the game up at 1-1 by scoring a power-play goal with just six seconds remaining in the first period.
Jack Anderson and
Sam Rice assisted with the equalizer goal.
Gustavus and Bethel battled in deadlock for the next two periods, sending the game to overtime tied at 1-1. It didn't take long for a winner to be determined in the extra period as
Grant Ellings scored a game-winner just 40 seconds into the frame. Anderson assisted Ellings with the game-winner.
Marko Belak earned the win in goal for the Gusties, saving 22 shots on goal.
Up next for the Gusties is a two-game series against the Saint John's University Johnnies, beginning at home this upcoming Friday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m.
