FARGO, N.D. & OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 20 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday, opening the day with a road win over Minnesota Crookston before falling to Creighton in Omaha.
Gustavus vs UM-Crookston
The Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team came away with a 5-2 victory over Minnesota Crookston Sunday morning at Courts Plus in Fargo.
Gustavus earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches on the day. At #1 doubles,
Ella De Young and
Allison Szalay posted a 6-3 win.
Pavla Yakimova and
Jemima Vitou followed with a 6-4 victory at #2 doubles, and
Katie Thompson and
Melat Tabara closed the set with a 6-2 win at #3 doubles to give the Gusties an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Gusties continued their strong showing. De Young delivered a straight-sets win at #1 singles (6-3, 6-1), while
Madison Packer earned a win at #4 singles via opponent retirement. Vitou added a straight-sets victory at #5 singles (6-3, 6-2), and
Ashley Stroebel sealed the team victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #6 singles. Szalay and Yakimova fell in two close singles matches at #2 and #3, but the depth across the lineup carried the day.
Gustavus vs Creighton
The Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team was topped 6-1 by Creighton University on Sunday morning in Omaha.
The Gusties picked up their lone point of the match in doubles play. At #1 doubles,
Karina Elvestrom and
Kaya De Bruijn earned a 6-2 victory to give Gustavus an early highlight. Creighton claimed the remaining two doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
In singles play, the Bluejays won five of six matches to clinch the team victory.
Lanie Davis provided the lone singles win for Gustavus with a straight-sets victory at #5 singles (6-2, 6-4). The remaining singles flights went in Creighton's favor, as the hosts closed out the match efficiently.
