St. Louis, MO - The Gustavus baseball team fell to the 12th-ranked Wash U Bears on Sunday in two highly spirited contests.
Game 1: Gustavus 2, WashU 6
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader for the Golden Gusties (7-7, 0-0 MIAC), sophomore
Logan Feeney (Le Sueur, Minn.) went five hard-fought innings, allowing three runs in those five innings. Freshman
Jack Ortale (St. Louis Park, Minn.) came in for Fenney in the 8th for the final three innings.
The bats for the Gusties would show up in the 4th inning, with sophomore Charlie Gearen (Minneapolis) sending a ball way over the left-center fence to get the Gusties on the board. That would not be the last of the Gusties in the 4th, as sophomore
Cade Kimmes would hit a single to right field to score catcher
Andrew Glovich (Sioux Falls). Gearen and Kimmes led the Gusties in game one with two hits apiece.
Game 2: Gustavus 4, WashU 11
The final game of the weekend started with freshman
Jack Paumen (Plato, Minn.) getting the start. He was replaced by junior
Owen Robinson (Minnetrista) in the second inning. Robinson would battle the Bears into the 5th inning. The Bears were only able to round up two hits and four strikeouts against Robinson. First-year
Kellen Westphal (Lino Lakes, Minn.) relieved Robinson in the fifth inning. After the fifth inning, the Gusties turned to sophomore Bryaden Windschitl (Excelsior, Minn.), who would embrace the windy conditions and give the Gusties a battle-tested 1.2 innings. Junior
Sam Kluever (Minnetrista, Minn.) would get the ball in the bottom of the 8th and would give the Gusties a clean frame while picking up his first college strikeout.
Senior
Joe Burns (Eden Prairie, Minn.) would get the Gusties on the board with a solo home run, just sneaking inside the right-field foul line. The Gusties would strike again in the 6th, with junior
Isaiah Hasz (Pine City, Minn.) hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to score Gearen. The Gusties would score in back-to-back innings by manufacturing runs.
In the 7th, junior
Dylan Kopesky (Mankato, Minn.) would get the inning started with a four-pitch walk, one of his three walks on the day. He would advance to second on a single by sophomore
Jackson Golberg (Savage, Minn.). Junior
Brayden Kohls (Norwood, Minn.) wore a fastball to make the bases loaded. Gearen would hit a fly ball to right field to score Kopesky. The eighth inning would also be prosperous for the Gusties, as Golberg would drive a single to score Hasz.Â
The Gusties are back in action on Saturday as they open MIAC play against the Cobbers of Concordia, with the first pitch being at 1 p.m. at the Gustie Baseball Field.Â
