FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 17 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team battled the No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis Bears and the No. 15 University of Mary Washington Eagles on Friday in the first two rounds of the Mary Washington Invitational. The Gusties fell 4-2 to the Bears in the quarterfinals and then dropped their second round match in the back semifinals 4-2 to the Eagles, moving to 13-8 on the season.
Match One: No. 8 WashU
In the first match of the day against WashU, the Gusties earned a 6-1 win at #2 doubles with
Dominik Knutson and
Takura Mhwandagara. The Bears, however, took the other two doubles matches to go up 1-0 heading into singles.
Knutson won #2 singles 6-4, 7-5 and
Tyler Haddorff took #3 singles 6-2, 7-6 for Gustavus, but WashU won three singles matches to take the team victory 4-2 over the Gusties.
Match Two: No. 15 Mary Washington
In the second match of the day against their invitational host, the Gusties dropped #3 and then #1 doubles to the Eagles as Mary Washingotn went up 1-0.
Gustavus tied the Eagles when Haddorff won #3 singles 6-1, 6-4 to set the team score at 1-1. Mary Washington then took #1 singles to go up 2-1. Knutson tied the match again for the Gusties with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 marathon victory at #2 singles. The Eagles retook the lead again with a win at #5 singles and then secured the team victory with a #4 singles victory, up 4-2.
