ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team battled the Hamline University Pipers on Wednesday afternoon in a conference doubleheader. The Gusties dominated game one 9-2 and rallied in game two for a 10-8 victory to sweep the Pipers, improving to 13-13 overall on the year and 6-4 in the MIAC.
Game One
Gustavus took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one as, with runners on second and third,
Carly Olson hit a double to left that drove in a pair.
In the bottom half of the second, Hamline cut the Gusties' lead in half as a first and third double steal led to a run scoring.
In the top of the third, Gustavus responded in kind with a double steal of their own with
Lauren Lambert scoring on a steal of home to put the Gusties up 3-1.
Olson doubled again in the fourth inning to drive in another Gustavus run as they took a 4-1 lead. Next up was
Macy Lembke, who followed with a sac fly to right to put the Gusties up 5-1.
Caitlin Olafsson and Lambert both hit sac flies in the sixth to increase Gustavus' lead to 7-1.
The Gusties scored once more as Olson hit her third RBI double of the game in the seventh, driving in a pair to give the Gusties a 9-1 lead.
The Pipers scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but
Maizie Anderson finished her complete game performance in the circle for Gustavus to earn the win after allowing just two runs while striking out six in seven innings.
Game Two
In game two, the Gusties jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Olson drove in a pair with a single to left. Hamline responded with four runs in the bottom of the first to go up 4-2.
The Pipers added two more runs in the second to take a 6-2 lead, but Gustavus responded with a four-run inning in the third to tie the game. After the first three batters of the inning reached to load the bases, Olson drew a walk to drive in a run to cut Hamline's lead to three.
Nicole Westover followed with a two-run RBI single to left to pull the Gusties to within one, and
Olivia Guggenberger then hit a sac fly to right to tie the game at 6-6.
Gustavus took the lead for the first time in the fourth as
Paige Gritzmaker hit a sac fly to center to put the Gusties up 7-6. The Pipers responded in the bottom of the frame to tie the game again at 7-7.
Gritzmaker drove in two more for Gustavus in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to right, putting the Gusties up 9-7. Olafsson added one more run in the top of the seventh on a sac fly, putting Gustavus up 10-7.
Hamline scored once more with two outs in the seventh, but
Hailey Petzel got the final batter to secure the 10-8 win. Petzel pitched 5.2 innings to earn the win, allowing just two runs and three hits while striking out four.

Gustavus will compete in St. Paul again on Saturday, April 18 in a MIAC doubleheader against the St. Catherine University Wildcats starting at 1:00 p.m.
