NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team battled the St. Olaf College Oles on Sunday in a conference doubleheader. The Gusties fell 8-3 in game one and 9-8 in game two to the Oles, falling to 13-15 overall and 6-6 in the MIAC.
Game One
In game one, St. Olaf took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Lauren Lambert tied the game at 2-2 for Gustavus in the top of the second, driving in a pair with a single to center. The Oles responded with four runs in the bottom half of the second to retake the lead up 6-2.
The Gusties scored once more as
Taylor Katzenmeyer drove in a run with a bases-loaded hit in the fifth. St. Olaf went on to add two more runs in the sixth as they took the opener 8-3.
Game Two
Gustavus jumped out to a lead with a four-run top of the first in game two. The first three batters all reached on two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases for
Hailey Petzel, who single to right to drive in the first run of the game. Lambert then scored from third in a wild pitch to put the Gusties up 2-0 with no outs and two on.
After a pitching change by the Oles,
Madison Westover reached on a walk to load the bases again.
Carly Olson then doubled to center, driving in two more as Gustavus went up 4-0. St. Olaf escaped the eventful first inning with a called strikeout and then a double play.
The Oles scored a run in the second, but Macy Lambke hit an RBI single in the third to put the Gusties back up by four, leading 5-1.
Olivia Guggenberger drove in another Gustavus run with an RBI double to left center in the fourth to put the Gusties up 6-1.
St. Olaf started to rally with a run in the bottom of the fourth and then went on to score six runs in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead.
In the sixth, Guggenberger drove in another run with a single to right to cut the Oles lead down to one.
Macy McNally later scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game up at 8-8.
In the bottom of the seventh, St. Olaf drew a walk, advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt, and then hit a walk-off double to right center as the Gusties fell 9-8.
