SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team battled the College of Saint Benedict Bennies on Tuesday in a conference doubleheader. The Gusties dropped both games to the Bennies, falling 2-1 and 6-2 to move to 13-17 overall and 6-8 in the MIAC.
Game One
Saint Ben's took an early 1-0 lead as they scored in the top of the first inning. The Bennies lead remained the same until the sixth inning where they executed a safety squeeze bunt, scoring another run to go up 2-0
Lauren Lambert led off the bottom of the sixth with a single down the left field line.
Megan Sherwood replaced Lambert at first as a pinch runner as
Paige Gritzmaker stepped to the plate. Gritzmaker hammered a double to left center as Sherwood flew around the bases to score from first on the play, cutting the Bennies' lead down to one, trailing 2-1.
The rally fell short as Saint Ben's got the final five outs they needed to secure the game one victory.
Game Two
The Bennies jumped out to a 1-0 lead as they hit a leadoff solo shot in the first inning.
Gritzmaker tied the game in the bottom of the opening frame, driving in
Caitlin Olafsson from second with an RBI single.
Saint Ben's retook the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. In the third, the Bennies scored two more to go up 5-1.
In the fifth, Saint Ben's scored one more run to go up 6-1. The Gusties responded in the bottom half of the frame as
Breck Carlson drove in
Olivia Guggenberger from third, but they were not able to build a rally as they fell 6-2.

Gustavus travels up to Duluth this Saturday, April 25 for a conference doubleheader set for 3:00 p.m. against the College of St. Scholastica Saints.
