DULUTH, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team battled the College of Saint Scholastica Saints on Saturday in a conference doubleheader. The Gusties swept the two-game series 3-0, 3-1 to improve to 15-17 overall and 8-8 in the MIAC.

Game One

Gustavus threatened in the top of the second as the first three batters reached base, but St. Scholastica managed to escape the inning without letting in a run.

Paige Gritzmaker gave Gustavus a 2-0 lead in the top of the third as, after Lauren Lambert drew a walk, she blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall.

The Gusties added another in the third as, after the first three batters of the inning all reached, Caitlin Olafsson hit an RBI single to put Gustavus up 3-0.

Hailey Petzel was stellar in the circle for the Gusties with a complete-game shutout performance, allowing only four hits while striking out three in seven scoreless innings.

Game Two

In the top of the first, Lambert reached on a walk and then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Gritzmaker then struck out but the pitch was wild, allowing the play to go live as she reached first safely and Lambert advanced to third. Gritzmaker then started a delayed double steal, being tagged out as she retreated back to first but allowing Lambert to score from third, giving Gustavus an early 1-0 lead.

Lambert scored again in the third. With two outs, she drew a walk and then advanced to second when Gritzmaker was hit by a pitch. Carly Olson then gave the Gusties a 2-0 lead with an RBI single to center, driving in Lambert.

In the sixth, Breck Carlson hit a double to get into scoring position. In the next at bat, Olivia Guggenberger singled to center to drive in Carlson, giving Gustavus a 3-0 lead.

The Saints broke the shutout with a home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Maizie Anderson closed out the 3-1 victory in the circle. Anderson pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out 10 and giving up just one walk through seven innings.
