No. 19 Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 2 UChicago in Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournament

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 19 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team battled the No. 2  University of Chicago Maroons on Sunday at the Wilkinson Tennis Complex in the in the third round of the 2026 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship. The Gusties fell 4-0 to the Maroons in the Sweet 16 as Gustavus moved to 30-6 overall this spring.
 
UChicago earned the first win of the day with a 6-1 final at #3 doubles. The Maroons then secured the doubles team point with a 6-3 win at #2 doubles. Karina Elvestrom and Kaya De Bruijn were leading their #1 doubles match 4-3 before UChicago clinched the point.
 
Gustavus won a couple early games in the opening set of singles play, but the Maroons found their stride and pulled away. UChicago took #3 singles 6-2, 6-2 for their second team point, followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #6 singles, and then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #4 singles.
 
Elvestrom had been battling back in her second set down 3-2 after dropping her first set 6-3 at #1 singles at the time of the Maroon's clinch. De Bruijn had also been fighting back at #2 singles, up 3-2 in the second after a dropping set one 6-0.
 
The Gusties finished their team competition this season with a 30-6 overall record. In the MIAC, Gustavus went undefeated through all 10 matches to win their second consecutive and 32nd overall regular season championship. In the postseason, a pair of 4-0 wins over Bethel and Carleton secured their second in a row and 10th all-time MIAC Playoff title for the Gusties. Gustavus then hosted an NCAA Regional for the national tournament, defeating No. 28 UW-La Crosse 4-0 in the second round to advance to the Sweet 16.
 
Though their team competition has come to an end this spring, two Gusties are still set to travel to the NCAA Individual Championships starting Saturday, May 23: Elvestrom will compete in the national singles bracket, both she and De Bruijn are the second alternate team for doubles, and De Bruijn is the sixth alternate for singles.
