Box Score 2 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 23 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team competed in their opening competition of the fall season this weekend. The Gusties battled the Creighton University Blue Jays, an NCAA Division I team, in a dual and then participated in the Augustana Invite against Creighton and two Division II teams: the Augustana University Vikings and the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers.
Dual vs. Creighton
The Gusties fell 7-0 to Creighton in the dual.
Dominik Knutson led Gustavus at No. 1 singles, pushing the top Blue Jay singles player Timothee Lustig to three sets. Knutson took the opening set 6-3 but then fell 6-0 in the second and 7-6 in the third.
Takura Mhwandagara and
Christian Wong led the Gusties in doubles, battling Jack McMahon and Lucas Mommessin in the No. 1 match. The Gusties took five games from the Blue Jays in the match but fell 7-5.
Augustana Invite
Following their dual against Creighton, Gustavus went on to compete in the Augustana Invite this weekend.
In singles, Gustavus had four players earn wins in the quarterfinal round of their flights against their upper-division opponents.
Owen Skanse rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Ilan Fuentes of Nebraska-Kearney.
Ethan Beal won 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 over Keagen Lowman of Augustana.
Maarten Beekhuis took down Julian Mallory of Augustana 6-2, 6-2.
Rafael Silva Jose De Carvalho cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win against Sebastian Garcia of Augustana.
Christian Wong and
Elijah Olson won their opening round pro set singles matches at the invite. Wong defeated Jakub Strzelecki 9-8 (7-5). Olson won 8-4 over Julian Mallory of Augustana.
In doubles, two of the Gusties' doubles teams were victories in the opening round.
Takura Mhwandagara and
Dominik Knutson teamed up for an 8-5 win over Pedro Pinto and Will Koziara of Augustana. Additionally,
Ethan Ellor and
Christian Wong took down Luca Klaiber and Lucas Vaisee of Nebraska-Kearney, 8-5.
Ellor and Wong advanced through the semifinals as their opponents retired due to injury. Mhwandagara and Knutson battled Mathis Dahler and Rocky McKenzie of Creighton in the semis, falling 6-2.
In the doubles championship match of their flight, Ellor and Wong took on Jack McMahon and Lucas Mommessin of Creighton. The Gustavus duo proved victorious, winning the match 6-3 over their Division I opponents.
