McCoy Breaks Program Win Record, Gusties Defeat St. Scholastica 1-0

SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus women's hockey team welcomed St. Scholastica to Don Roberts Ice Rink for its first home game of the season, and skated away with a 1-0 MIAC victory. Hannah Gray netted the only goal of the game 4:42 into the first period, and it proved to be enough, as Katie McCoy saved all seven shots she faced for the shutout victory. The win marked McCoy's 64th in a Gustie jersey — and her first in the team's brand-new gold sweaters — effectively setting the record for most career wins by a Gustie goaltender. McCoy passes Danielle Justice (2008-12) for the record.

After erupting for six goals against the Saints on Thursday, including four in the third period, the Gusties only managed one past Scholastica goaltender Kenzie Cole. On a 2-on-1 rush down the ice with linemate Kaitlyn Holland, Gray opted to take the shot, sending the puck straight into the left corner to beat Cole.

While Gray's goal proved to be the game-winner, her play of the game came midway through the third period. The Gusties found themselves on the penalty kill at minute 14 of the final frame. Pressure from St. Scholastica's power play unit forced the Gusties out of position, and a rebound off of McCoy generated a scramble in front of the net. Gray, with no stick in hand, made a diving play in front of the wide open goal to tip the game-tying shot just wide of the net and maintain the lead for the Gusties.

The Gusties outshot St. Scholastica 46-7. Emily Olson led the way, tallying a game-high and career-best 10 shots on goal. Gray, Brooke Power, and Brooke Remington each added five on net. Sophia Coltvet picked up the assist on Gray's goal, and now has a point in each of the Gusties' three games to start the season. McCoy's shutout is her second of the season and the 29th of her career.

The Gusties are back in action next weekend, hosting Bethel Friday for the first of the two-game series.
