DULUTH, Minn. — The Gustavus women's hockey team opened MIAC play at St. Scholastica Thursday night, rolling to a 6-0 win against the Saints.
Kaitlyn Holland led the offense, factoring on five of the Gusties' six goals. The Gusties scored one goal in the first and the second periods before erupting for four in the third, improving to 2-0 overall and 1-0 to open conference play.
Just as she did in their first game of the season, senior defender
Sophia Coltvet got the Gusties on the board to start the game, scoring the first goal on the power play 14 minutes into the first period.
Hannah Gray scored the second goal of the game in the second frame, getting a feed from
Kaitlyn Holland and
Molly McHugh for a 2-0 lead after 40.
The Gustavus offense shined in the final period, as Holland netted her first goal, and third point, just 1:34 into the third. The junior lit the lamp for the second time 13 minutes later, taking advantage of a Saints turnover in front of the net to give the Gusties a 4-0 lead.
Hailey Holland joined her sister in the scoring fun four minutes later, tallying the fifth of the day on a nifty backhand play. Gray closed things out just 20 seconds later, scoring the final goal off a
Kaitlyn Holland rebound to seal the Gusties' first MIAC win.
Holland wrapped up the day with five points and five shots on goal. Gray wasn't far behind, posting a four point night of her own with a pair of assists and two goals.
Katie McCoy picked up the shutout between the pipes, saving all 17 shots she faced.
The Gusties are back in action for their home opener Saturday afternoon, hosting St. Scholastica at Don Roberts Ice Rink for Parents' Day and the unveiling of the 2023 National Championship banner.
