WINONA, Minn. - The Gustavus men's hockey team Saturday tied Saint Mary's 4-4 and dropped a point in the conference standings with a shootout loss. The Gusties move to 5-4-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals move to 2-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the league.Â
Saint Mary's struck first with the game's first two goals. The Cardinals scored twice within nine seconds of each other early in the first period before the Gusties responded on the power play at the 17:17 mark.
Luke Delzer scored with the help of
Jack Anderson and
Nate Stone.Â
The Cardinals regained a two goal lead 7:32 into the second, but the Gusties answered less than a minute later as
Jack Suchy scored with the help of Anderson and
Jack Kubitz. And with 14 seconds remaining in the second,
Grant Ellings tied the game, assisted by
Drew Holt and
Wilmer Svensson.Â
Gustavus then took a 4-3 lead 1:45 into the third as Holt scored with the help of Ellings. The Gusties held the one-goal lead through the majority of the frame until the Cardinals pulled their goalie late and netted the equalizer with just 11 seconds left in regulation.Â
Neither team scored in the five-minute overtime and the game was sent to a shootout. The Cardinals scored on their first three attempts while the Gusties missed one, resulting in the extra point for the home team.Â
The Gusties outshot the Cardinals 39-25.
Jackson Hjelle made 21 saves in 58 minutes of action, allowing two goals.Â
Gustavus has a non-conference series with Concordia-Wisconsin next weekend in Mequon, Wis.Â
