SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus women's hockey team completed the sweep of Saint Mary's Saturday at home, defeating the Cardinals 3-0 at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
Sophia Coltvet,
Hailey Holland, and
Brooke Power scored the three Gustie goals, while
Katie McCoy posted the 10-save shutout between the pipes. The win is McCoy's 68th of her career, effectively passing the MIAC record held by Kenzie Torpy (St. Thomas, 2015-19) for career goaltender wins.
The Gusties, who had to battle back from a deficit in last night's game one against the Cardinals, wasted no time taking the early lead.
Sophia Coltvet took advantage of a power play opportunity to give the Gusties the 1-0 lead eight minutes into the first.
Hailey Holland added the second goal for the Gusties, and her second of the weekend, stripping Saint Mary's of the puck in the neutral zone to walk in and score the unassisted tally at the end of the first.
Neither team scored in the second period, but
Brooke Power added the final punctuation mark of the game, tipping in a pass from
Hannah Gray past Cardinal goaltender Celeste Rimstad. The goal was also Power's second of the weekend, and she now has six on the season in seven games.
The Gusties outshot the Cardinals 19-10, with seven of the 19 coming off the stick of Power. The Gusties were dominant in the faceoff circle, winning 36 of 45 draws. The victory also marked another milestone, this time for Head Coach
Mike Carroll, who picks up career coaching win No. 499. One more will give him 500, moving him into fifth of all women's hockey coaches at any NCAA level.
The Gusties head to Wisconsin Tuesday to face rival UW-River Falls at 7:05 p.m.
