SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus women's hockey team completed another MIAC sweep Saturday afternoon, this time over Saint Benedict, as the Gusties claimed a 6-1 win at home. Six different players scored for Gustavus in the victory, while
Katie McCoy shut down 14 Bennie attempts to pick up the win between the pipes. The Gusties improve to 11-2 overall and 8-0 in the conference.
The Gusties used a big first period to lead them to victory, as
Molly McHugh,
Avery Braunshausen, and
Brooke Power each added a tally for the home team.
Hailey Holland assisted all three goals, getting the primary helper on the latter two. The Gusties used three lateral passes to beat Bennie goaltender Kate Moffat, scoring on the back-door play three times, all within a span of six minutes.
Saint Benedict got one back in the second, as Sami Boerboom rifled a shot right under the crossbar of McCoy to cut the lead to two and break the fifth-year's shutout.
Hannah Gray responded for the Gusties, as the junior hammered home a rebound off a wrap around attempt on the stick of
Emily Olson. The 4-1 lead would have been enough to win it, but
Kylie Scott and
Kaitlyn Holland added one goal each in the third for insurance. Scott found the back of the net from the blue line, taking the feed from
Lily Mortenson and McHugh for her second goal of the series.
Kaitlyn Holland added one more three minutes later off an assist from
Kylie Ligday.
The Holland sisters and McHugh led the team in points, with
Hailey Holland posting three on three assists, while
Kaitlyn Holland and McHugh each had two points on a goal and an assist. 18 different players had at least one shot on goal, contributing to a total of 44 on the night to the Bennies' 15.
The Gusties continue MIAC play next weekend, hosting Augsburg Friday before heading to Minneapolis to complete the series Saturday at 4 p.m.
