SAINT PETER, Minn. - In a matchup featuring two of the top four women's basketball teams in the MIAC, Gustavus had 14 different players score in a decisive 101-49 victory Saturday afternoon against St. Catherine at Gus Young Court. The No. 6 nationally-ranked Gusties improve to 16-1 overall and 12-0 in the MIAC, while the Wildcats drop to 12-6 overall and 7-5 in the league.
Gustavus scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back. The Gusties made 13-of-18 shots in the opening 10 minutes for a 31-8 lead entering the second quarter. The home team continued to shoot lights out and added to its lead in the second frame, going into the locker room with a 62-19 advantage. Gustavus shot 73.5 percent in the first 20 minutes and held the Wildcats to 26.9 percent.
The third quarter was the most contested with Gustavus edging the Wildcats 17-14 on the scoreboard, but the Gusties continued to add to their lead throughout the remainder of the game to reach the century mark for the first time since a 106-63 win over Hamline on Feb. 4, 2017.
Gustavus set season highs in points scored, field goals made (39), and assists (30). The Gusties shot 66.1 percent for the game, which is just 0.6 percent shy of the program record.
Emma Kniefel led the offense with 15 points and six assists.
Rachel Kawiecki was next with 14 points, five assists, and four steals.
Kylie Baranick finished with 10 points.
The Gusties are back in action Wednesday night at home against St. Scholastica.
