SUPERIOR Wis. - Gustavus men's hockey dropped its season opener 3-1 at UW-Superior on Friday night. The Gusties held a lead early in the game, but the Yellowjackets responded with three unanswered goals.
Jack Suchy opened the scoring for the Gusties at the 7:40 mark of the first period. Following a successful penalty kill, goalie
Colin Androlewicz cleared the puck around the boards where
Hunter Newhouse collected the puck at center ice, worked around a defender and found Suchy wide open in the slot for the one-timer.
The Yellowjackets tied the game at the 15:21 mark after a loose puck in front the net was sent in for a goal and the score remained 1-1 at the first intermission.
Superior then took a 2-1 lead 6:24 into the second, taking advantage of the Gusties being unable to hold the zone, which resulted in a loose puck in the neutral zone and a breakaway goal. The home team carried a 2-1 lead into the third period.
The Gusties fired 12 shots on goal in the third period but were unable to find the back of the net. UW-Superior took advantage of an empty net for its third goal with just three seconds left in the game.
The Yellowjackets outshot the Gusties 30-27. Neither team was successful on the power play with the Gusties going 0-for-6 and Superior 0-for-4. In his first collegiate game, Androlewicz made 27 saves.
Gustavus stays in Wisconsin for a matchup at UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. Saturday.
