SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus men's hockey team suffered an 8-6 loss to Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday, dropping to 6-5 overall.
The Gusties wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as
Jack Suchy scored his team-leading seventh goal just 2:32 into the contest. Suchy scored from in the slot on an assist from
Hunter Newhouse. Concordia was whistled for the first penalty of the game at the 8:05 mark and it took just eight seconds on the power play for the Gusties to score as
Nate Stone centered a pass from the right point, which was redirected into the goal by
Wilmer Svensson for a two-goal lead.
Gustavus gained a 3-0 lead at the 11:39 mark by taking advantage of a two-on-one breakaway as Suchy fed
Luke Delzer in the slot for a backhanded goal, but the Falcons answered 13 seconds later with a breakaway score of their own. Concordia then cut the deficit to one with 6:05 remaining in the first, scoring on a power play. The Gusties maintained a 3-2 lead at the end of the first with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Gusties gained a 4-2 lead just 1:25 into the second as
Grant Ellings broke free up the left side for an unassisted goal. The Falcons answered with a scoring spree, though, tallying three consecutive goals at the 3:15, 6:08, and 9:40 marks for a 5-4 advantage. Suchy appeared to have scored the equalizer on a sharp-angled shot with 1:28 left in the second, and the puck went in the goal, but the officials did not allow the score. Playing hard in the final seconds of the second, the Gusties tied it up 5-5 on a power play as Suchy found
Jack Anderson in the left circle for a one-timer goal with just two seconds on the clock.
Ellings regained the Gustie lead 3:47 into the third period after collecting a loose puck in his own end and went the distance for a breakaway goal. But in the back-and-forth nature of the game, the Falcons tied the score 6-6 at the 11:25 mark. The visitors then scored the back-breaking goal with 1:13 remaining for a 7-6 lead, and an empty-netter with six seconds left sealed the game.
Gustavus out-shot CUW 25-22 as
Marko Belak made 14 saves.
Gustavus now breaks for the holidays are returns to action Jan. 2-3 for a non-conference series at Dubuque.
