DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Gustavus men's hockey team kicked of the 2025 calendar year with a decisive 6-2 win at the University of Dubuque, improving to 7-5 overall.
The Gusties took advantage of a power play early in the first as
Grant Ellings scored on the man-advantage, assisted by
Wilmer Svensson and
Drew Holt at the 2:27 mark. Just over a minute later,
Joey Gimberlin and
Luke Delzer worked the puck down the ice, finding
Riku Brown for a one-timer goal on the right side. And with 2:30 remaining in the first,
Jack Wineman skated through a handful of defenders along the left boards and connected with
Hunter Newhouse on the back side for a 3-0 lead at the end of the opening frame.
The Gusties extended their lead to five goals in the second period thanks to Ellings recording his first career hat trick. Ellings tallied his second goal of the game at the 4:05 mark, assisted by
Jackson McCarthy and Svensson. Ellings then completed the hat trick at the 10:53 mark with the help of Holt and Svensson.
Dubuque ended the shutout 3:17 into the third period and tallied another with 3:37 remaining in regulation, but it was too little, too late.
