Lily Timmons Selected as MIAC Defensive Player of the Week

12/16/2024 1:00:00 PM

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Lily Timmons (Fy., Stillwater, Minn.) was named the MIAC Women's Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday, Dec. 16.

Timmons backstopped the No. 5 Gustavus women's hockey team to a trio of non-conference wins last week. The first-year posted a career-high 33 saves against No. 2 UW-River Falls in leading the Gusties to a 7-2 victory over their rivals from across the border.

She added an eight-save performance in a period and a half shutout against Aurora on Friday, before posting 21 saves on Saturday against the Spartans to earn her eighth victory of the season.

Her 33 saves against River Falls bettered her previous season-high of 23 set twice this year, both against nationally-ranked opponents (No. 13/14 UW-Eau Claire and No. 7/8 Augsburg). She's made 20 or more saves four times this season, earning a pair of shutouts, including her 23-save performance against Augsburg on Dec. 6. Her two shutouts rank second in the conference and eighth nationally through the first few months of the season.

This is the first MIAC honor of Timmons' young career, and the second for the women's hockey team, as Lily Mortenson (Jr., Champlin, Minn.) was named the Offensive Player of the Week on Dec. 2.

The Gusties will enjoy a month off for the holiday before hosting UW-Eau Claire (10-3-0, 4-1-0 WIAC) for a non-conference game at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Jan. 14.
