SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus men's hockey team scored four times in the third period for a convincing 5-1 win over Augsburg in game one of the MIAC series Friday at Don Robert Ice Rink. The Gusties improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC, while extending their winning streak to five games, marking the longest streak since the 2013-14 season.
The Gusties got on the board first midway through the opening frame as
Luke Delzer scored after some nifty back-and-forth passing with
Riku Brown and the home team carried a 1-0 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes.
The Auggies took advantage of a power play at the 8:38 mark of the second and the score remained tied after 40 minutes of action. Gustavus took back control of the game 9:17 into the third as
Hunter Newhouse buried a goal on a rebound with the assists going to
Jack Wineman and
Jack Suchy. Four minutes later,
Christian Miller found
Hunter Newhouse open at neutral ice who scored a breakaway goal. The Gusties scored twice more in the ensuing two minutes as Delzer tallied his second goal of the night with the help of
Jac Triemert and Brown.
Grant Ellings then scored a power play goal with less than five minutes on the clock, assisted by
Nate Stone and
Drew Holt.
The Gusties went 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off 4-of-5 advantages for the Auggies. The Gusties also nearly doubled the visitors in shots on goal, 28-15, as
Marko Belak made 14 saves.
Game two of the series is set for 7 p.m. Saturday in Minneapolis.
