MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Gustavus men's hockey completed a MIAC series sweep over Augsburg on Saturday night with a 5-1 victory. After starting the season 0-3, the Gusties have won six consecutive games to improve to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC, sitting atop of the conference standings with 15 points.
Augsburg got on the board first with a goal at the 17:42 mark of the first and appeared to be headed into the first intermission with a one-goal lead, but the Gusties took advantage of a power play with just 12 seconds on the clock. A shot by
Jackson McCarthy was tipped in by
Grant Ellings and the score was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The Gusties took the lead at the 8:32 mark of the second on another redirected shot.
Jack Anderson took a shot from the blue line and
Wilmer Svensson tipped it in. Two minutes later,
Kyle Heffron found Anderson wide open for a one-timer to put the Gusties up 3-1.
Christian Miller gave the Gusties a 4-1 advantage with six minutes left in the third on a one-timer from
Jack Kubitz.
Jack Suchy then put a stamp on the victory with an empty-netter in the final 90 seconds.
The Gusties out-shot the Auggies 36-26 as
Marko Belak made 25 saves to pick up his sixth consecutive win between the pipes. The Gusties converted on 1-of-2 power plays and stopped all four Auggie man-advantages.
Gustavus will host Concordia-Wisconsin for a non-conference series next Friday and Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
