SAINT PETER, Minn. - Wilmer Svensson's overtime goal with less than a minute on the clock secured the Gustavus men's hockey team's sweep over Concordia in a 5-4 decision Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties, who earned their third consecutive victory, improve to 10-11-2 overall and 5-8-1 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers drop to 10-10-3 overall and 5-7-2 in the league.Â
It didn't take long for the Gusties to get on the board as
Mason Hendrickson and
Joey Gimberlin found
Hunter Newhouse for his first goal of the season 2:50 into the game. The Cobbers answered with a power play goal four minutes later, but
Kylar Fenton regained the Gusties lead at the 12:41 mark with the help of Hendrickson.Â
Concordia tied the game once again at the 6:58 mark of the second period, but again the Gusties had an answer.
Joey Gimberlin scored with the help of
Landon Johnson at the 9:01 mark.Â
The Cobbers tied the game for the third time with a short handed goal at the 7:23 mark of the third period and then took their first lead five minutes later. With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Newhouse connected with
Lucas Jorgenson for his first goal of the season and the score remained 4-4 through regulation, setting up Svensson's overtime goal, which was assisted by
Drew Holt.Â
Jackson Hjelle earned the win in goal after making 21 saves.Â
Gustavus will close out the regular season next weekend with a series against St. Olaf. Friday night is in Saint Peter and Saturday in Northfield.Â
