SAINT PETER, Minn. - Coaching in his final career home game at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Friday night,
Brett Petersen directed the Gustavus men's hockey team to its fourth straight victory in a 4-0 decision over St. Olaf. The Gusties improve to 11-11-2 overall and 6-8-1 in the MIAC, while the Oles drop to 10-11-3 overall and 6-7-2 in the league.
After going scoreless in their first two power play opportunities in the first period, the Gusties found the back of the net on their third man-advantage.
Grant Ellings connected with
Hunter Newhouse who scored from the slot at the 16:03 mark, which proved to be the game-winning goal. The Gusties went up 2-0 with five minutes left in the second period as
Joey Gimberlin found
Mason Hendrickson for the score.
Getting the start on Senior Night and playing in the 20th game of his career,
Porter Haney made the most of the opportunity with his first career goal at the 14:37 mark of the third period.
Micah Gernander and
Jack Kubitz assisted on the goal. And with 1:41 left in the game, Gernander scored an empty-netter to seal the victory.
Playing in the 53rd game of his career,
Jackson Hjelle made 24 saves and secured his third shutout of the season, while dropping his goals against average to 2.15 and increasing his save percentage to .920.
Gustavus wraps up the 2023-24 season Saturday at St. Olaf.
