SAINT PETER, Minn. — With a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon, the No. 2 Gustavus women's hockey team completed a crucial series sweep of Hamline, who sit directly behind the Gusties in the MIAC standings. One goal in the first and two in the second propelled the Gusties past the Pipers, who now separate themselves at the top of the league standings with a conference record of 13-1-0 and an overall record of 16-4-0.
Hannah Gray opened up the scoring halfway through the first period for the Gusties, once again picking up a loose rebound out front, the same way she did the night before. Gray's goal, assisted by
Molly McHugh and
Hannah Thompson, gave the home team the 1-0 lead heading into first intermission.
Hailey Holland netted the second goal of the game seven minutes into the second, taking a
Brooke Power pass through the neutral zone, beating the Piper defender, and scoring low blocker side on Hamline goalie Nordick on the breakaway. Just two shifts later,
Macy Janssen gave the Gusties a three goal advantage, as a pass from McHugh to the point gave Janssen the time and space to send one past Kendra Nordick with traffic out front. Hamline got one back late in the period, as Morgan Wohlers sent a rebound past
Katie McCoy to break her shutout, but it wasn't enough to top the Gusties.
Both teams played a physical game, with a total of 14 collective penalties called. The eight penalties against the Gusties were the team's most all season. The Gusties totaled 18 shots on goal in the game, including four off the stick of
Emily Olson and three from
Kaitlyn Holland. McHugh's two points led the team offensively.
The Gusties head up to Moorhead next weekend to play the Cobbers for two, before facing St. Olaf for the final MIAC series of the season the weekend after.
