Women's Hockey Clinches Regular Season Title with 5-1 Win at Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Gustavus women's hockey team earned its 19th MIAC regular season title Friday night with a 5-1 victory at Concordia. Five different Gusties scored a goal in the win, which pushed the Gusties' record to 17-4-0 and 14-1-0 in the league.

Kylie Scott scored the game's first goal midway through the first period, taking a pass from Lily Mortenson off a Brooke Power faceoff win to send the puck to the far post from the point. Her goal gave the Gusties the lead through the first intermission.

Kayla Woytcke scored what turned out to be the game-winner, as the sophomore sped into the Cobber zone and scored her first goal in a Gustie jersey seven minutes into the period. Hannah Gray extended the lead in the final seconds of the second frame, taking a feed from Molly McHugh for a 3-0 Gustie lead after 40 minutes.

Concordia got one past Katie McCoy to break the shutout in the third, as Morgan Sauvageau walked through the Gustie zone and slid one past the fifth-year All-American netminder. The Cobber goal was far too little, far too late, as Gustavus added two more tallies before the game's end. Sophia Coltvet scored her team-leading sixth power play goal to bring the lead back to three. Margot Bettman put the punctuation mark on the game, knocking a puck out of the air and into the back of the net for her second of the season and the 5-1 final.

Coltvet, McHugh, and Woytcke each posted two points in the game. Coltvet and Hailey Holland led the offensive attempts with seven shots on goal each. The team gave Concordia goaltender Hailee Bailey all she could handle, putting 46 shots on goal and matching their season-high. Katie McCoy picked up her 77th win between the pipes with a 13-save victory.

The Gusties and Cobbers will face each other once more tomorrow afternoon. The conference championship-sealing win gives the Gusties the No. 1 seed in the MIAC Playoffs and home ice advantage for the tournament, which will take place Feb. 21-March 2.
