SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus men's hockey team had seven different players score goals Friday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink in a decisive 7-2 victory over Concordia. Tonight marked the first seven-goal win over a conference opponent since Jan. 31, 2020. The Gusties improve to 9-11-2 overall and 4-8-1 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers drop to 10-9-3 overall and 5-6-2 in the league.
Concordia took the first lead 9:25 into the game and maintained the one-goal advantage at the first intermission.
Drew Holt netted the equalizer 1:49 into the second period with the assist of
Grant Ellings and
Landon Johnson. Two minutes later the Cobbers regained the advantage but the Gusties were quick to respond. Ellings scored top shelf on a power play to tie the score at the 5:43 mark. The goal was his team-leading eighth of the season. Less than three minutes later and on another Gustie power play,
Jack Anderson scored with the help of
Connor Mahony and the Gusties carried a 3-2 lead into the third frame.
Jack Suchy sniped in a goal at the 5:16 mark of the third with Mahony collecting his second assist of the game. Suchy's goal matched Ellings for the team lead at eight this season.
Jackson Hjelle also got credit for the rare goalie assist, marking the first of his career.
Wilmer Svensson and
Stanislav Danaev scored within 15 seconds of each other midway through the period and the rout was on.
Marc Fletemeyer then added an empty netter with 4:29 left in the game for the final score.
The Gustie penalty kill was a perfect 6-for-6 on the night, while the power play went 2-for-6. The Cobbers outshot the Gusties 26-21 with Hjelle making 24 saves.
Gustavus and Concordia wrap up the series at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
