GLOUCESTER, Mass. — The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) announced the finalists for the 2023-24 Division III Women's CCM/AHCA Player of the Year and Coach of the Year awards, naming Gustie women's hockey players
Hailey Holland and
Katie McCoy and Head Coach
Mike Carroll as finalists.
Holland is a finalist for the Laura Hurd for the second year in a row. The MIAC Offensive Player of the Year, Holland tallied her third 30-point season this year, with 19 goals and 11 assists for 30 points. Holland scored 24 of those points in conference contests, with 14 goals and 10 helpers in league games. The fifth-year led the league in goals, points, hat tricks, and plus/minus. Her 10 assists were third in the conference, behind teammates McHugh and
Lily Mortenson, while her two short-handed goals ranked second in the MIAC and ninth in the country. With the team's only goal against UW-River Falls on Saturday, Holland finished her career in the Three Crowns with 141 total points, which puts her third all-time in points in program history, just three behind Hall of Famer Sarah Garrison Moe (1998-99, 2000-02) in second. The Aberdeen, S.D. native earned the team's 12th MIAC Player of the Year Award, and is the first player since
Andrea Peterson (2003-07) to earn a POTY honor in more than one season. She is the 24th MIAC player to receive All-Conference recognition in all four of her eligible seasons, and was named to the conference's All-Playoff team. She finished her season scoring at least a point in five of her last six games.
On the other end of the ice,
Katie McCoy has established herself as one of Division III's best goaltenders of all-time. McCoy, who was named an All-American last season and the USCHO.com Goaltender of the Year, continued to impress in her fifth and final season, setting multiple program, MIAC, and NCAA all-time records. After a 1-0 win against St. Catherine on Jan. 27, McCoy became the all-time leader in career shutouts at the NCAA Division III level with 32 to her name. She has added two more since then, and was the active career leader in the stat in all levels and genders of NCAA hockey this season. A couple weeks later, McCoy and the Gusties claimed their 19th MIAC Regular Season Championship with a 6-0 win over Concordia, marking the Grafton, Wis. native's 78th career win, now the most in NCAA Division III women's hockey history. McCoy finished her career with an impressive record of 82-14-3, a 0.99 goals against average, 1,538 saves, and a 0.940 save percentage.
Carroll, in his 25th season behind the bench, was named the MIAC's Coach of the Year for the ninth time after directing the Gusties to their fourth consecutive MIAC regular season championship with a 17-1-0 league record for the second straight season. Carroll and his staff also picked up a record-setting fourth consecutive MIAC Playoff Championship, earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time in program history. In a 5-0 win against Aurora in December, Coach Carroll became the fifth women's hockey coach in all divisions of NCAA women's hockey – and second in all of Division III – to reach 500 career wins.
Gustavus has two Laura Hurd Player of the Year award winners in program history, Sarah Garrison Moe (2002) and
Andrea Peterson (2007). The winners of this year's Coach and Player of the Year awards will be announced on Thursday, March 14.
