Three Gusties Named CCM/AHCA Women’s Division III All-America

3/14/2024 8:00:00 PM

GLOUCESTER, Mass. — Three Gusties earned West All-America honors on the CCM/AHCA Women's Division III All-America Hockey Team, announced Thursday.

Katie McCoy permanently etched her name in NCAA Division III history this season, as the fifth-year was selected as the only goalie on the West First Team, and one of just two netminders to receive First Team recognition. For the second year in a row, Hailey Holland was named to the West Second Team, while Sophia Coltvet wrapped up her senior season in a Gustie jersey with her first All-America nod, joining Holland on the Second Team. The CCM/AHCA All-America Hockey Teams are chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association.

Between the pipes, Katie McCoy certainly proved herself to be the best goaltender in the West, if not the country, as the Grafton, Wis. native holds nearly every record available to her after a historical career in the Black & Gold. McCoy set multiple program, MIAC, and NCAA all-time records in her fifth season, most notably claiming the Division III shutout (32) and win (78) records. She finished her career with an impressive record of 82-14-3, a 0.99 goals against average, 1,538 saves, and a 0.940 save percentage. With McCoy in net, the Gusties continued to post the country's premier defense, leading the nation once more in team shutouts (11). In 26 games this season, McCoy allowed only 24 goals for a goals against average of 0.93, a save percentage of 0.946, 21 wins, and nine solo shutouts. She follows in the footsteps of Amanda DiNella (2015-19) as the only Gustie goalies to be receive multiple All-America honors.

Holland, the team's most prolific scorer since Andrea Peterson and Sarah Garrison Moe donned the Three Crowns, finished her Gustie career with her record third 30-point season. The MIAC Offensive Player of the Year, Holland tallied 19 goals and 11 assists, leading the team and the conference one final time. Her 141 career points put her third all-time in program history, behind only Garrison Moe (1998-99, 2000-02) and Peterson (2003-07). She's just the fourth player in Gustavus history to score 30 or more points in three seasons, joining Peterson, Kelly Crandall, and Garrison Moe, and is the first player since Peterson to receive a Player of the Year honor in more than one season. Holland became the 24th MIAC player to receive All-Conference recognition in all four of her eligible seasons, was named to the conference's All-Playoff team, and finished her season scoring at least a point in five of her last six games.

Sophia Coltvet, one of the team's senior captains, led the Gustie D-core this season, quarterbacking the Gustavus blue line as the team's No. 1 defender. The Arden Hills native led all defenders in scoring with 12 goals and five assists for 17 points in her final season. Coltvet managed a plus/minus rating of +21 over the season, and led the NCAA in a number of statistical categories. Coltvet scored a career-high seven goals on the power play, a mark that ranked second in the nation in the regular season. Her four game-winners were also tied for 11th. Thanks to the tandem efforts of Coltvet and McCoy between the pipes, the Gusties once again posted some of the NCAA's best defense numbers, holding opponents to a 0.93 goals against average and just 25 goals all season – the third-best mark in the NCAA.

McCoy, Holland, and Coltvet bring the total program All-America honors to 32, with McCoy and Holland the seventh and eighth players to earn the distinction twice. This is just the third time that three Gusties have earned All-America status. McCoy and Holland were also recognized as finalists for the Laura Hurd Award, given annually to the best NCAA Division III women's ice hockey player in the country. Head Coach Mike Carroll was named one of 12 finalists for the National Coach of the Year Award after leading the Gusties back to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third consecutive season.

UW-River Falls' Joe Cranston was named the National Coach of the Year, while the Falcons' Maddie McCollins was named the recipient of the Laura Hurd Award.
