5/11/2024 6:53:00 PM

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Gustavus track & field concluded its team season Saturday at the MIAC Outdoor Championships, hosted by Hamline. The Gustie women took second place while the men finished seventh.

The Gustie women started day two with a bang as the 4x100 relay team of Danielle Miller, Megan Geraets, Ally Rakow, and Kate Carlson won with a season best time of 47.95. The Gusties then picked up conference titles in all sprint races. Carlson won the 100 with a personal best time of 11.85. Geraets and Carlson finished one-two, respectively, in the 200 with personal best times of 23.97 and 24.01. Both of those times bested the previous MIAC Championships record of 24.41, and rank first and second in NCAA Division III this season. And Geraets notched another title in the 400 with a school and MIAC Championships record time of 55.88.

"For our women's team, we knew we could get to 120-130 points and Bethel could get to 160 and Saint Benedict could go over 130. We new we could move up but needed a few things to go our way," said Head Coach Aaron Lund. "It's incredible that we were able to move up 30 points while those two teams still matched their projection. It was a battle until the very end and I give a lot of credit to those teams for also performing at their best under pressure.

"The conference title came down to the final race and that was so exciting for our team. We left it all out on the track and have no regrets. Kelley, Dani, Olivia, Ally, Madi, Kesha, Lili and Alli were all key contributors and many others including freshmen stepped up in a big way. Megan was the highest point scorer in the entire meet getting 30.5 points. Kate was the third highest track point scorer with 22.5 points. Megan and Kate put down some heroic performances to lead this team to one of the best team finishes in school history. They are now ranked first and second in the nation in the 200-meter and ran the 17th and 22nd best performances in the history of DIII."

The Gustie women earned five more All-Conference honors. In her final attempt, Madi Kes won the triple jump with a distance of 37-11.25. Lili Guy took third at 35-11.25. Lakesha Carter took third place in the javelin with a mark of 125-9 and Kelley Brennan finished third in the shot put with a heave of 40-10.25. The 4x400 relay team of McKenzie Luetmer, Carlson, Syd Hauger, and Geraets finished second in 3:53.35. Ali Graff was on place shy of All-MIAC honors in the pole vault, taking fourth with a height of 10-8.25. Miller was also one spot out of All-Conference accolades, taking fourth in the 100-hurdles with a time of 15.09.

Tyler Smith highlighted day two for the men, taking second place in the 800, crossing the line in 1:54.88. The 4x100 relay team of Isaiah Subah, Jade Anstine, Nathan Le, and Matthew Skelly earned All-MIAC with a third place finish in 42.29. Anstine was one place shy of All-Conference in the 100, taking fourth in 10.85. Anstine then took fifth in the 200 with a personal best time of 21.48. Sam Schulze took sixth in the 400-hurdles at 55.76. Danny Bies cleared 6-3.25 in the high jump for seventh place. Logan Marzinske took eighth in the pole vault with a height of 13-1.5.

"For our men's team, our team finish doesn't tell the whole story," Lund said. "This conference continues to amaze me with the talent level throughout all of the men's and women's teams. There are 15 different events where there is at least one MIAC athlete in the top five on the national performance list. All fifteen of those athletes will be contending for a national title in their event this year. Right now it takes a school record or close to it type of performance to win or even score in this conference. Nick, Tyler, Jade, Cole, Danny, Logan, Logan, Sam, Connor and Zack were key contributors this weekend. And our relay teams stepped up in a huge way to get some big points.

"I am so proud of this team for who they are and how amazing they are at representing Gustavus. They have worked incredibly hard every day and are so deserving of the blessings and amazing memories that they have made. Never take a step without leaving your print. This team has left their mark and they should be very proud of what they accomplished this year."

Gustavus will now wait for the NCAA Championship individual selections, which will be announced Friday.
