NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Gustavus men's track & field team finished in a tie for fourth place at the MIAC Outdoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, ending with 79 total points.
The day started with the 4x100-meter relay team of junior
Tyler Heil (Appleton, Wis.), sophomores Frank Terway (Brownton, Minn.) and
Conner Martens (Nicollet, Minn.), and junior
Jade Anstine (Sioux Falls, S.D.) earning all-conference honors by finishing third with a time of 41.98. Senior
Will Janzen (Minneapolis, Minn.) continued the scoring, finishing eighth in the steeplechase to grab one more point towards the team total. Fellow senior
Connor McCormick (Stillwater, Minn.) used a personal best in the 110-meter finals to finish fourth while Anstine ran a speedy 10.55 in the 100-meter grab third place and six more points. McCormick and sophomore
Eric Richards (Mankato, Minn.) also qualified for the 400-meter hurdles yesterday and crossed the finish line in seventh and eighth on Saturday, good for a combined three points. Anstine's third event of the day was the 200-meter finals where he got sixth in a time of 21.92.
The last and most electric race of the day was the 4x400-meter relay, where the Gusties came into the event down six points on Concordia in fourth. Senior
Cohen Stursa (Medford, Minn.), Martens, first-year
Luke Scheel (Mankato, Minn.), and junior
Nick Brauer (Mankato, Minn.) rounded the last 200-meters in third place, when Brauer came out of nowhere and overtook both St. Olaf and Bethel, crossing just 0.41 seconds ahead of second place to push the team to a tie for fourth place.
Sophomore
Kyler Flunker (Mankato, Minn.) continued his reign on top of the MIAC in the high jump this season, winning the event for 10 more points. Sophomore classmate
Liam Frommelt (Woodbury, Minn.) was the only other scorer on the day for Gustavus in the field, finishing seventh in the triple jump with a 13.56 meter mark.
The next chance for the Gusties to compete is on Thursday, where a select group take on the UW-La Crosse Last Chance Meet, looking to secure a spot at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
